Russell Brand has admitted in a new interview – shortly before his sexual assault trial begins – as a 30-year-old having “consensual sex” with a 16-year-old girl.

On the “Megyn Kelly Show,” the actor spoke about the accusation that he “took advantage of 16-year-olds,” as the host put it. “I actually slept with a 16-year-old when I was 30. I was a completely different person then. I was younger and an immature 30-year-old,” Brand said, pointing out that the age of consent in the UK is 16.

“Consensual sex with a lot of people, when there is a strong power imbalance – as is the case with a famous man who had the ability to attract women, like I had at the time – in my opinion involves exploitation. I think it’s exploitative,” he continued. “I recognize that my sexual behavior in the past has been selfish and that I have had little consideration – almost none, in fact – about how that sex has affected other people.”

Trial begins in October

Due to Britain’s “contempt of court” laws, Brand did not comment on the specific allegations against him – including two counts of rape and sexual assault and one count of causing a public nuisance. However, he reiterated that he had “had consensual sex with many, many women” and that his celebrity status had given him “limitless approval.”

While Brand said he was atoning for his “sinful” past behavior, he “resolutely refused to view this as a criminal matter in which consent was bypassed. What actually happened was that consent was directed – that’s what fame and – dare I say, charisma, pardon me – allow you to do.”

Brand has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His sexual assault trial is scheduled to begin in October. “In this process, I will have the opportunity – as will the people who feel wronged – to seek justice. I have no problem praying for absolute justice and the best possible outcome for everyone involved.”
