Rugby: Germany missed World Series

After qualifying for a World Cup for the first time, the German 7-a-side rugby national team missed the leap to the World Series.

At the Challenger Series in Santiago de Chile, the “Wolfpack” lost to Uruguay in the semifinals with 15:19 and is again not in the elite league. In the group stage, the German team had won the duel with the South Americans.

“Of course we are very disappointed with the result, but above all with our own performance,” said national coach Clemens von Grumbkow: “We never really made it into the tournament. Somehow it didn’t work out this time.”

The German team had to settle for fourth place in the Estadio Santa Laura, the bronze match against hosts Chile was lost 12:14.

The Uruguayans secured the status as “core team” for the World Rugby Sevens Series with a 19:5 in the final against Georgia.

In mid-July, the German team secured a ticket for the World Cup in South Africa (September 9th to 11th) at the qualifying tournament in Bucharest.
