WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed cautious optimism about diplomatic efforts to end the Iran war. He believes progress has been made, he said before his departure to a NATO meeting in Sweden. “There are some good signs,” but he didn’t want to be “overly optimistic,” emphasized Rubio.

In doing so, he reiterated the representation that the USA has often made that Iran is dealing with a “slightly” broken system. Rubio also emphasized that US President Donald Trump favors a deal. “But if we can’t reach a good deal, the president has made it clear he has other options.”

Trump recently threatened Iran with attacks again after negotiations over a permanent end to the war stalled. However, according to his own account, he postponed a new US attack that was supposedly planned for the beginning of this week – on the grounds that there were serious negotiations./fsp/DP/men
