The Portuguese coach, Ruben Amorim on the Manchester United sidelines

The traditional Italian club AC Milan has ended its week-long search for a coach and introduced Ruben Amorim as its new coach.

As the Rossoneri announced on Tuesday, Ruben Amorim will replace Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked in May. The Portuguese prevailed against, among others, Oliver Glasner, who had also been traded by the Serie A club. According to reports, Amorim signed a contract until 2028 – with an option for a further year – five months after his expulsion from Manchester United.

Amorim: “Club means prestige and history”

“There are goals that stay with you throughout your career and becoming coach of AC Milan has always been one of my goals,” said Amorim. “I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an exceptional fan base around the world. It is a challenge that I accept with pride and enthusiasm, knowing full well what these colors stand for.”

After fifth place and missing out on a place in the Champions League, the 41-year-old should lead Milan back on the road to success. After the club dismissed its entire sporting leadership, it is still unclear who it will tackle this task with.

Not very successful recently at Manchester United

Before moving to England, Amorim himself had become one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe. At Sporting Lisbon he ended a 19-year wait for the championship title in 2021 and confirmed success in 2024. The 41-year-old then succeeded Erik ten Hag in Manchester, but achieved 15th place, the worst final position since 1974.

With a points average of 1.43, he is the Red Devils’ worst team manager of the past 50 years. Amorim’s new Italian appointment should bring a sigh of relief to the English team: in February, United announced that Amorim’s release could cost the club up to 18.4 million euros. This amount will now no longer apply. Markus Krösche could soon follow Amorim to Milan. The current Frankfurt sports director is seen as the new sporting director for the Italians.
