Rob Jetten spoke to the press yesterday in a suit with sneakers underneath. Shameful, says Josine Droogendijk, the royal family expert from RTL Tonight. “I wouldn’t have advised it myself.”

D66 leader Rob Jetten is currently negotiating with CDA leader Henri Bontenbal about the formation of a new cabinet. The politician tries to radiate positivity and vitality and he does this, among other things, by wearing sneakers under his suit. It was a topic last night RTL Tonightthe talk show of Beau van Erven Dorens.

What does Josine think?

Beau presents it to one of the authorities at the RTL Tonight desk. “If Rob Jetten becomes Prime Minister, he will not only be the youngest ever in the Torentje, but also the hippest, I think. Josine, you are also a fashion journalist, right?”

Royalty fan Josine Droogendijk then: “Yes, I wrote a series a few years ago and it was called De Schoenen van Hugo. That was for the AD. I can start that again with Rob’s shoes.”

‘I would advise against it’

Josine thinks this is a good idea faux pas. “The formation is of course quite an important process and what you actually want to convey, even as Rob Jetten, I think, is: I take my job seriously, I also take the future of our country seriously. The last thing I would advise him is: put on sneakers. I would not have advised it myself, no.”

Saskia Belleman, who was also asked for her opinion, says: “I’m a bit confused. I have to be completely honest: I’m also wearing sneakers!”

Josine thinks Rob should be careful. “You shouldn’t underestimate it. Sometimes one photo can influence your entire image. You still want to show that you are very serious about it.”

“I think it is to Rob Jetten’s advantage that he is finally getting gray hair, because it also gives him a certain seniority. In the Netherlands, authority is often linked to seniority.”
