Under Van den IJssel, HFC, the oldest football club in the Netherlands, had a strong end to the competition. Seven of the last nine games were converted into winning. Thanks to this final sprint, HFC finished as a second-best North Holland team at the highest amateur level. Only AFC finished higher, the Amsterdam rival eventually finished third.
In the past, Van den IJssel worked in the youth at Ajax and also as head coach of ARC, CSW Wilnis and Jodan Boys. At Ajax he was among other things the assistant of John Heitinga at the Under 19 and he was at the helm as a trainer of the under 15 and under16 of the Amsterdam club.
