The rowers of Skøll, consisting of Jan van der Bij, Olav Molenaar, Wibout Rustenburg, Mats van Sabben and mate Lotte Vedel crowned themselves champions. “A victory for this competition, which is something big in Dutch student rowing,” explains Rustenburg. “That released more than I expected.”
Fifth team member ‘killed’
The members of Skøll have partyed until the early hours. And where there were five in the boat yesterday, there was four present to give the interview. Where was the missing Olav miller? “It was killed, I hope he is in bed. Haha, nothing to hear about.”
For Molenaar and Van der Bij, both Olympians, the Varsity is a very special competition. Outsiders may think that the Games is the highest attainable, but rowers at the student associations know that the competition of the year is really this – and in particular the king’s number: the old four.
