The Dutch remain avid cyclists, and last year the pedals were again fully pedalled. An analysis by Fietsnetwerk.nl shows that the Dwingelderveld route in Drenthe will be the most popular cycling route in 2024.
This route, which runs through Ruinen and Dwingeloo, among others, managed to surpass the coastal and dune routes and finished in first place.
The routes along the Dutch coast have been favorites for years, and this year there are three coastal routes in the top 10. However, it was noticeable that there has been more variation in the list. Director Wouter Terpstra of Fietsnetwerk.nl is pleasantly surprised with the new number one. “For years, the Zeeland coastal routes dominated the top of the rankings, but now we see that nature reserves such as the Veluwe and Twente are also becoming increasingly popular,” says Terpstra.
The Dwingelderveld route is praised for the peace and beauty of the Drenthe landscape. “Perhaps cyclists nowadays value forests and heathland more than beaches,” Terpstra speculates.
In addition to the Dwingelderveld route being the most cycled, the route also received good reviews from users of the Fietsnetwerk app. Cyclists can give a thumbs up or down after a tour. The routes in the top 10 received the most positive assessments, which further confirms their place in the list.
These are the ten most popular cycling routes of 2024 according to Fietsnetwerk.nl:
“The list was compiled based on the data of 150,000 app users,” saysfietsnetwerk.nl. “Three million visitors come to our site every year. We have drawn up this list based on how often a route is viewed on the site and the app. We also took into account how often a route was actually started in the app.”
