BUCHAREST (dpa-AFX) – A man crashed his car into the fence of the Russian embassy in Bucharest on Wednesday morning. The driver was found dead, the police said in the Romanian capital. Before that, the car caught fire. At first nothing was known about the exact background. It was also unclear whether the incident was connected to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The police and prosecutors began investigations.

Russia reacted indignantly to the incident. Russian Ambassador Valery Kuzmin told state broadcaster Rossiya-24 that it was a terrorist attack. However, the circumstances are still unclear, Kuzmin admitted. The atmosphere is tense. Kuzmin said the embassy has received repeated emails threatening “detonation” or “retaliation.” He did not initially present any evidence./kl/DP/eas
