SALZGITTER (dpa-AFX) – There should be job security for the around 2,000 employees of Volkswagen’s battery subsidiary PowerCo until the end of 2030. This is provided for in a new collective bargaining package that was negotiated between PowerCo and IG Metall, the union said. The collective agreement is scheduled to run from March 1, 2026 to December 31, 2030. “During this period, terminations of employment for operational reasons are bindingly excluded,” said IG Metall.
According to IG Metall, the result of the negotiations will become effective if it has been accepted by both parties to the collective agreement by February 28th.
Sebastian Krapoth, Human Resources Manager at PowerCo, said in a statement that the deal takes into account the current challenges of the battery industry and strengthens the future and competitiveness of the company by postponing the tariff increase. “At the same time, it creates planning security and is an important signal to our workforce,” said Krapoth. “We are taking a similar approach to Volkswagen (Volkswagen (VW) vz) AG and ensuring that we can continue to consistently pursue our ambitious growth goals.”
IG Metall: Reliability for the workforce
Volkswagen started its own battery production at the Salzgitter plant last December. The cell factory on the site of the previous VW (Volkswagen (VW) vz) engine plant had been under construction since July 2022. More than a billion euros have been invested so far.
The agreement reached creates reliability for the workforce and for the location, said Alina Roß, negotiator for IG Metall Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt in a statement. In addition, an increase in table fees of 5.5 percent is said to have been agreed. However, this increase will not take effect immediately, but will be deferred until April 1, 2031. This collective wage agreement can therefore be terminated for the first time on March 31, 2027./len/DP/jha
