MUNICH (dpa-AFX) – For the first time since the beginning of March, diesel is cheaper than the cheapest common type of gasoline, E10. On a nationwide daily average on Saturday, a liter of diesel cost 1,990 euros, but a liter of E10 cost 1,994 euros, as the ADAC reports. Diesel was 0.9 cents cheaper compared to Friday. E10 remained unchanged.

At the beginning of April – at the time of peak fuel prices – diesel was now more than 25 cents more expensive than E10 – even though the fuel is taxed lower. Since then, diesel has become cheaper by a good 45 cents per liter. Super E10, on the other hand, was only cheaper by just under 20 cents. Although the fuel discount plays a role in reducing the price, it has not directly changed the price difference between diesel and E10. For both fuels it is 16.7 cents per liter.

The trend is not uniform across the country: On Saturday, diesel was cheaper than E10 on average in 12 out of 16 federal states. In four federal states (Hamburg, Bremen, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria) the price of E10 was still lower than the price of diesel.

Diesel is more sensitive to crises

In terms of price, diesel is considered to be more sensitive to crises than gasoline, among other things because Germany is partially dependent on imports for diesel. Even at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, diesel had increased in price much more quickly than gasoline and cost more for months.

On a long-term average before the start of the Ukraine war, diesel was more than 15 cents cheaper than E10. Since then, the gap has not increased to this level for a long time – possibly because a lot of relatively cheap diesel was imported from Russia until 2022. In 2024 and 2025, diesel was on average just over 8 cents cheaper than E10.

In principle, significantly more diesel than E10 is consumed in Germany, which is particularly due to the fact that the vast majority of all trucks run on the fuel. However, cars with gasoline engines are much more common among private individuals. The two most important types of premium gasoline are E5 and E10. The latter is characterized by a higher proportion of biofuel and was usually around 6 cents cheaper than E5. Nevertheless, E5 is still fueled more frequently overall – although the vast majority of cars can tolerate the cheaper E10./ruc/DP/mis
