As of: January 29, 2024 8:14 p.m

Thanks to a converted penalty shortly before the end, Cape Verde won the duel of the surprise teams and reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ryan Mendes (88th) decided the round of 16 against Mauritania on Monday (December 29th, 2024) with strong nerves from the penalty spot; goalkeeper Babacar Niasse had previously brought down the Cape Verdean striker Benchimol after an unsuccessful return.
