Rotterdam: Sonego fights, but Dimitrov wins. At 7.30pm it’s Sinner’s turn

Lorenzo says goodbye to the tournament at the end of the match against the number 6 seed, still playing an excellent match: 7-6 6-3 partials

Francesco Sessa

Lorenzo Sonego fights, but it’s not enough. The tennis player from Turin plays an excellent match, point for point, but has to give in against a tough opponent, one of the fittest players in recent months: Grigor Dimitrov, seeded number 6, wins in two sets (7-6 6 -3) and reaches the round of 16 of the 500 in Rotterdam, where he will face Marton Fucsovics who yesterday won the derby against his compatriot Fabian Marozsan. Sonego will now move to Doha, then play in Dubai before the trip to the United States.

the match

The Rotterdam crowd enjoyed a high-level match. As expected, Dimitrov commands the operations and Lorenzo manages to resist as much as he can. After a complicated start (immediate break for the Bulgarian) the Italian enters the match, immediately mends the gap and manages to bring the set to a tie break, despite an extraordinary performance from his opponent with the first serve: throughout the match, Dimitrov doesn’t lose a single point when he isn’t forced to play the second, 39 out of 39. Well done to Sonego in managing to create the chances anyway: after the tie break won 7-4 by Grigor, Lorenzo has two break points in the fifth game of the second set, after canceling as many with two excellent serves in the previous game. In the end, in the eighth game, the break comes in favor of Dimitrov: it is the moment that, in fact, he closes the match.

waiting for jannik

The day opened with the victory of Monfils in two straight sets against Shapovalov (7-6 7-6) and the success of Ruusuvuori in three sets against Humbert, fresh champion in Marseille in the final against Dimitrov. The other matches scheduled today are Bublik-Raonic, Rune-Safiullin, Goffin-De Minaur and Rublev against Auger Aliassime, as well as clearly the eagerly awaited Jannik Sinner match: the South Tyrolean will return to the court after his victory at the Australian Open to challenge Botic Van de Zandschulp at 7.30pm.
