Roger Schmidt feels sorry for Mvogo and foresees difficult title race

The goalkeeper change at PSV, before the top meeting with AZ, turned out completely wrong. Yvon Mvogo was preferred over Joël Drommel, but made a mistake as a result of which the Eindhoven team lost 1-2 on Saturday evening. Afterwards, Roger Schmidt spoke to the press present. The bald trainer discussed the goalkeeper change and the title race.

According to Schmidt, Saturday evening was the right time to change his goalkeeper. In the past transfer period it was still uncertain whether Yvon Mvogo would leave. Now that it is certain that the Swiss goalie will finish the season in Eindhoven, he was preferred over Joël Drommel, who is uncertain this season.

“Joel wasn’t performing well enough anymore. He had too many bad moments after the winter break. Yvon did very well in the training sessions. He is my goalkeeper for now.”

With that, the trainer immediately hinted that his blunder was not going to be fatal to him. There was also an immediate warning. “I cannot guarantee anyone to play. But you don’t change a goalkeeper every game. That’s different from a player. But goalkeeper mistakes have already cost us a lot of points this season.”

A painful conclusion, although the German coach also let it be known that he felt bad for the goalkeeper. “I am sad for Yvon. He was so motivated and I sincerely hoped he could stand out. It is very unfortunate that he makes the decisive mistake. He feels very bad.”

Captain Cody Gakpo also saw this, who indicated that he would support his goalkeeper where possible. “He doesn’t do it on purpose. We will support him and stand behind him. He is not the only culprit. We are on the field with eleven men.”

PSV lost another top match due to the goalkeeper’s mistake. The deficit on Ajax can grow to five points with a victory by the team from Amsterdam on Sunday. And so Schmidt foresees a difficult title race.

“Ajax don’t lose many matches, that’s a fact. We have to win almost every game if we want to become champions.”
