Brendan Rodgers left as Celtic coach, Martin O’Neill interim coach

9:20 am: Brendan Rodgers has resigned as Celtic coach. The 52-year-old Northern Irish trainer started his second period with the Scottish national champions in 2023, where he previously worked from 2016 to 2019. O’Neill, who managed Celtic from 2000 to 2005, will take over as interim coach for the time being.

“Brendan Rodgers has tendered his resignation. This has been accepted by the club and he is leaving immediately,” Celtic said in a statement. Rodgers’ departure follows a poor period in which Celtic lost in the Champions League qualifiers to Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty and in the competition to Dundee and last Sunday to Hearts.

Rodgers won the championship with Celtic in the past two years. The club is now second in the Scottish league, 8 points behind leaders Hearts.

End of ‘Traai van de Kaai’ after 44 editions

9:54 PM: There will be no 45th edition of the professional criterium Draai van de Kaai next year. This was decided by the foundation of the cycling festival after the Tour de France.

The Draai van de Kaai foundation has announced that it is becoming increasingly difficult to cover all costs. More and more riders would like to spend time with their family after the Tour de France. The foundation also notices that top riders ask for more money to come to Roosendaal.

De Draai van de Kaai was also affected by the Tour de France Femmes, which meant that the best cyclists did not participate in cycling criteria.

Former top boxer Manny Pacquiao appointed as chairman of the controversial boxing association IBA

6:31 PM: Former top boxer Manny Pacquiao has been appointed vice-president of the International Boxing Federation IBA. The 46-year-old Filipino will manage the controversial association alongside Russian chairman Umar Kremlev.

The IBA has been on a collision course with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for years, due to problems with governance and financing by Russian gas giant Gazprom. That is why the IOC organized the Olympic boxing tournament in 2020 and 2024 on its own. With the recently founded World Boxing, it now has a new partner for the next Games in Los Angeles.

“I want to build bridges between amateurs and professionals, between East and West, generations and cultures,” Pacquiao says in a press release. He is the only boxer to win world titles in eight different weight classes.

The Filipino ended his career four years ago and wanted to become president of the Philippines. In May he announced a temporary comeback. His fight against American Mario Barrios in Las Vegas did not result in a winner.

Nageeye tempers New York marathon expectations: body cracks

5:36 PM: Abdi Nageeye hopes to win the New York Marathon for the second time on Sunday, but he does not see himself as the favorite. “Last year I was in a better position. That is the feeling. The training went quite well, but the body starts to crack a bit as we get older,” says the 36-year-old athlete in the run-up to the prestigious classic over 42.195 kilometers in the American metropolis.

“Winning New York last year was wonderful and I now wear starting number 1. It means that I am a little less open-minded at the start, because all eyes are on me. I already feel more tension, especially because Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele are also participating. For me, those are the two greatest of all timeso I’m definitely going to enjoy it too.”

Kenyan Kipchoge is a two-time Olympic marathon champion and a former world record holder (2.01.09). The Ethiopian Bekele is a multiple Olympic and world champion at 5000 and 10,000 meters.

Nageeye is running his 25th marathon in New York. So it will be a personal anniversary edition. “It dawns on me that I am no longer the youngest. The training sessions are becoming more and more of a ‘struggle’. Nowadays I need two massages a day and I spend 45 minutes stretching to warm up.”

He also sees the competition in the marathon increasing. “Every year there are a few Kenyan super talents who run terribly fast. It goes faster and faster. When I see their times in training, I blink my eyes, because I really can’t manage that. In short, the marathon is becoming more and more of a challenge for me,” says the runner who achieved Olympic silver in 2021 and improved the Dutch record to 2.04.20 in London this spring.

Hassan nominated again for athlete of the year election

1:05 PM: Sifan Hassan is again one of the five nominees to be voted the best athlete in the world in the road athletes category. This was announced by the international athletics federation World Athletics. Last year, Hassan won the honorary title for the first time.

To extend her title, the reigning Olympic champion at the classic distance over 42.195 kilometers must defeat the Ethiopian top runner Tigst Assefa, the current number 1 in the world rankings for the marathon. The other nominees are the Kenyan athletes Peres Jepchirchir (marathon world champion) and Agnes Ngetich, and the Spanish María Pérez. The Spanish race walker was also nominated to become European athlete of the year, but lost this election to Femke Bol.

Two weeks ago, the nominees for the title of best athlete in the world in the track athletes category were announced, including Femke Bol. The Amersfoort native will compete against the American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, her great rival in the 400 meter hurdles in recent years, who very successfully switched to the 400 meters without obstacles. The nominees in the technical components category were revealed last week.

The public can choose a winner in the road athletes category until November 2. The winners will be announced during a World Athletics gala on November 30.

Hassan (32) won the Sydney marathon at the end of August and will be at the start of the New York marathon for the first time in her career on Sunday.

1:02 PM: Juventus has fired coach Igor Tudor. The club from Turin reports that the 47-year-old Croat has been removed from his position after seven months. The same goes for his staff.

Juventus, with Teun Koopmeiners in the team, lost 1-0 to Lazio on Sunday, their second defeat in Serie A, where the club is currently eighth with 12 points, six fewer than leaders Napoli and AS Roma.

Tudor was appointed as Thiago Motta’s successor in March. He was previously assistant to Andrea Pirlo at the club from Turin.

Massimo Brambilla, the trainer of Juventus’ talents, is currently in charge of the first team. The team will play at home against Udinese in the competition on Wednesday.
