Robert Carradine’s cause of death has now been officially confirmed after the actor passed away on Monday, February 23 at the age of 71.

His death was ruled a suicide, according to the Los Angeles coroner’s office. The cause of death was given as a result of hypoxic brain damage – this occurs when the brain is completely deprived of oxygen.

Best known for his role in the 1980s cult film “Revenge of the Nerds,” Carradine won a new generation of fans in the early 2000s with “Lizzie McGuire” on the Disney Channel.

Family honors his fight

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle and brother Robert Carradine,” the family said in an earlier statement. “In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a ray of light to everyone around him. We are devastated by the loss of this beautiful soul and want to recognize Bobby’s brave battle with nearly two decades of bipolar disorder. We hope his journey can shine a light and help break the stigma surrounding mental illness.”

Following the news of his death, Carradine’s “Lizzie McGuire” colleagues and other Hollywood companions shared heartfelt tributes to his legacy.

Hilary Duff, who played the title role of Lizzie, shared photos on Instagram of herself and Carradine, who portrayed her father Sam McGuire. In the caption, Duff wrote: “This hurts. It’s really hard to accept this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and my TV parents always made me feel cared for. For that I will be forever grateful. I am deeply saddened to learn that Bobby suffered. My heart aches for him, his family and everyone who loved him.”
