Roadmap coming to help cities switch to zero-emission parcel delivery | Environment

Postal Minister Petra De Sutter (Green) wants more emission-free zones for parcel deliveries in Belgian cities. She orders a study to develop a script for this.

The minister is responding to the presentation of the bpost ecozone in Leuven on Wednesday morning. Such an ecozone means that bpost delivers parcels and letters more sustainably, for example by using only electric vehicles and providing additional collection points. Leuven is the second Flemish city with an ecozone after Mechelen.

I see a strong dynamic, but often also a patchwork of individual measures to make parcel delivery more sustainable.

The ecozones are a success in terms of reducing CO2 emissions, says De Sutter, who is now investigating how even more cities can jump on the bandwagon. For this she orders a study, which should ultimately lead to a scenario with which every city can quickly establish an emission-free zone for every parcel company.

“I see a strong dynamic, but often also a patchwork of individual measures to make parcel delivery more sustainable. One mayor introduces an emission-free zone, the other works with pedestrian zones or delivery windows,” says the Groen Deputy Prime Minister. The aim of the study is to find a standard model, so that other local authorities can jump on the bandwagon more quickly.

The minister is looking at this The Netherlands† There, the government is going one step further: by 2025, emission-free zones will be introduced across the country, meaning that those without CO2 emissions will be fully supplied. Among other things, the Dutch government is making resources available to help entrepreneurs switch to electric delivery vehicles.
