After twenty years, Simon Jongsma and his wife Rita Ceulen say goodbye to their special place on the edge of Vessem. Their villa, hidden among the greenery and built in a striking architectural style, is for sale. “We fell for the shape and the light at the time,” says Simon.
When Simon visited the house in the early 2000s with his then wife, it was an immediate hit. “The special architecture immediately appealed to us,” he says. “Because of the lots of light and the sight lines, it immediately felt very special. My wife played the piano and gave piano lessons. The house offered a perfect place for her grand piano. She has now passed away.”

Plastic number
Later Simon discovered that the villa was designed according to the so-called plastic number. This is a theory of proportion in which spaces and lines reinforce each other according to fixed proportions. These principles are also applied within the Bossche School, a post-war architectural movement. “Someone came to visit and immediately said: this is a house like that. I had never heard of it before. But when I looked into it, it made perfect sense.”
He also finds the fifteen stained glass windows in the style of the famous Dutch artist Piet Mondriaan special. “I had them designed. They fit beautifully with the architecture.”

Endless walking
The villa on Postels Huufke is for sale for 1,195,000 euros kk. The house has 225 square meters of living space, a plot of 1,665 square meters and five bedrooms. The house is located in a small-scale residential area with detached houses on spacious forest plots. “If you walk out of the street, you immediately find yourself in the forest,” says Simon. “When I came to live here, I still had a dog. You can walk endlessly here. I didn’t know that at all when I still lived in South Holland.”

Inside, the seating area is a favorite. “We prefer to sit by the wood stove. I love lighting a fire,” he says. The large garden, with a pond, lots of greenery and privacy, is also a popular place.
New phase
Together with Rita, Simon is now moving to an apartment just across the border. “We still have that spacious feeling there because of all the glass,” says Simon. “But I will miss the wood stove. And of course the neighborhood. You know each other here, which is a very pleasant place to live.”
Simon concludes: “Everything you need is here. Furthermore, there is peace and quiet. You won’t find that anywhere else.”
