Riots on Mercatorplein in Amsterdam-West after winning a football match in Morocco

Riots broke out on the Mercatorplein in Amsterdam-West after Morocco’s win during the World Cup football match against Belgium. The atmosphere is grim. Some football fans set off targeted fireworks at the police. Due to the crowds, the square is difficult to pass.

The square was filled in the afternoon after a 0-2 win for Morocco. This game ended around 3:45 PM.

Several fires have been lit on the street. The intersection between Hoofdweg and Jan van Galenstraat is completely blocked. Motorists and scooter riders honk their horns and wave flags.

There are several police officers on the square. In addition, an ME unit is present for support.

Due to the crowds on the square, tram 7 and 13 and bus 15 and 18 are diverting. It is also busy on Burgmeester De Vlugtlaan, so bus 21 is detouring.
