Riots in Ecuadorian prisons: at least 29 dead in a few days | Abroad

Riots at a prison in Guayaquil, southwestern Ecuador, have left at least 13 dead and 23 injured. This is according to a recent report from the prison administration. Two days ago there was also a massacre in another Ecuadorian prison. Sixteen people were killed there.

Several officers were attacked with firearms when they intervened to restore order, police said. There are about 6,900 inmates in the prison. According to the Interior Ministry, control of the prison has since been regained. The cause of the riots is not yet known.

The new violence came after the massacre at the country’s Latacunga prison two days ago. At least 16 people were killed and 43 injured.

About 400 prisoners have been killed in clashes between rival gangs in Ecuador since February 2021. The overcrowding in Ecuadorian cells is about 30 percent. The country is one of the world’s largest cocaine producers.
