Riots at the European Championship qualifier in Bulgaria

Protests by Bulgarian football fans against association boss Borislav Mikhailov led to riots in Sofia.

During the European Championship qualifier against Hungary (2:2), supporters outside the national stadium threw firecrackers, stones and other objects at police officers.

The police used water cannons against the angry fans. It is currently unclear how many people were injured. The police want to provide more information on Friday.

Because of the protests that had been announced for days, the game was played without an audience. The city center of Sofia was completely cordoned off and, according to official information, 1,600 police officers were on duty.
