Review: Various :: MOPING IN STYLE – A TRIBUTE TO ADAM GREEN

An entertaining cross-section of 20 years of antifolk, which also brings together the elite of the indie scene.

Adam Green, the enfant terrible of antifolk, will now receive his own tribute album while he is still alive. On MOPING IN STYLE, scene greats such as Herman Dune, Father John Misty, Regina Spektor and the Libertines lovingly dedicate themselves to Green’s back catalogue. There is enough material, because Adam has been artistically active for over 20 years, not only as part of the Moldy Peaches, who have reunited, but also as a seasoned solo artist.

Adam Green influenced a whole generation of musicians with his nonchalant style, and that’s unmistakable on this sampler. The covers can be identified as such, but they always remain benevolent towards the original. However, the interpretation approaches vary greatly. “Jessica”, here performed acoustically by the Libertines, remains quite close to the original, Kyp Malone’s dark version of “Drugs” is miles away from it. Friend and companion Sean Ono Lennon delivers one of the strongest and most experimental tracks on the sampler with “That Fucking Feeling”.
