A bittersweet dream-pop requiem for a cat.
PON is the second album in three years with which Tujiko Noriko says goodbye. CRÉPUSCULE I & II was dedicated to the late friend and companion Peter Rehberg. PON appears on his label Editions Mego and pays tribute to the deaf cat she adopted, which the French-based Japanese woman also had to say goodbye to.
In over 14 pieces she once again dedicates herself to the wild mix of complex electronics and dream pop, which has earned her many unjustified Björk comparisons since her first release at the beginning of the millennium. Tujiko embeds the pleasant warmth and distant melancholy of her songs in sound structures characterized by rich textures and delicate rhythms, through which her voice flits like a supporting actress: she seems to constantly whisper, as if she doesn’t want to impose herself, as if the story told on PON wasn’t hers.
In a way, that’s true about this soothing, comforting album about loss.
