“I should actually be happy,” thought Tamara Lindeman as she lay on the floor and couldn’t get up again. With her project The Weather Station, she released the highly praised album IGNORANCE in 2021, which was found at the top of almost every serious best list. With HOW IS IT THAT I SHOULD LOOK IN THE STARE, a contemplative offshoot of this record was even released.

Lindeman had found a way to talk about herself and her sense of beauty with music that sounded dabbed and whispered. If you love the late Talk Talk, you will also love The Weather Station. Because things were supposed to go up again, the music on HUMANHOOD is more gripping. Songs like “Neon Signs” or “Windows” seem less fragile. The title track sounds groovy and playful, while on “Irreversible Damage” the band plays jazz to an unfiltered speech from a friend. These songs are surrounded by short, chamber music passages. At the end of the album, Tamara Lindeman finds her way back to standstill music: “Lonely” is a plea to endure loneliness. “Sewing” presents the method of healing wounds and scars with the sound of a clarinet that you will never forget.
