As is well known, music can be an effective way to process pain and grief. In 2014, Tubs front man Owen Williams lost his mother, folk musician and author Charlotte Greig. With Cotton Crown, he is now making a monument to her with Cotton Crown that begins with the cover. To see: A photo that Williams shows as an infant in the arms of his breastfeeding mother. In a cemetery. In front of a tombstone. The duality of life and death is closely intertwined.
And so this album is one in which the contrast makes music. He advocates between deep black lyrics like that of “freak fashion”, in which Williams dipped into his broken state during a time when he was no longer himself because of sheer grief. And a sound that connects to the life-affirming energy of the great Tubs debut Dead Meat.
With an original fusion of college rock from the Rem school, punken thread and British folk vibes. With tight striving power pop over pressure. And again and again with sweetly shaped guitar jangles who deserved a Johnny Marr Memorial Prize. Vital musical greetings can hardly be sent to the sky.
