When The Mars Volta 2022 reported back after a ten-year break, the comeback plate The Mars Volta polarized the Prog community. Finally, the guitarist, producer and musical director Omar Rodríguez-López as well as singer/copywriter Cedric Bixler-Zavala had been chosen as genre people since the 2003 debut and felt stunned by the unabashed pop focus of the material.
The fact that the acoustic twin album qué dios te Maldiga Mí Corazón was sent behind this experiment a year later did not help much – except perhaps perhaps to understand that there was a greater artistic concept here. Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio now presses the reset button again (and the right others).
Starting with the etheric vocalis fragment “Fin”, a nonlinear-coating fleet develops in 49 minutes and 18 tracks flowing, the backward-drawn sound effects, Khruangbin-and Pink-Floyd-Atmo and Mike Garson-Pianol runs, and still places small, indigestive song islands within its sliding structure, which is placed between Peter Position Gabriel and Phil Collins or psychedelically anchored soul catering units. It is all the more consistent that a “Lost Highway” saxophone leaves the album. Prog is also a question of perspective.
