To be as at peace with yourself as Spilif is with herself and her jazzy hip hop, that’s it.
This album is above all a great promise. The promise that peace of mind is possible. Take a step back and look at your life as calmly, contentedly and self-confidently as the Austrian rapper Spilif: Oh, what a dream that would be! Born in Innsbruck in 1989, Spilif discovered her passion for the rapped word early on, without immediately seeking the spotlight with her lyrics.
She only released her first EP three years ago, and now the debut album follows. It’s about getting older and friendship, about pausing and being able to let go. The tone always remains confident, almost meditative in its enviable serenity: “They say I should run / but I stay in the wing chair,” she raps in her smoky voice on the title song.
This laid-back vibe is underlined by drums, guitar and piano, which make the album sound a bit like a drum session and, above all, wonderfully jazzy. The fact that Spilif still values her roots in hip-hop becomes clear in her Max Herre reminiscence “Rap is”, which softens the heart of every hip-hop head. “Rap is an insider tip and the most popular music,” it says, among other things. Spilif’s music is definitely the former. And a blessing for the soul.
