Nothing to complain about, mates: the Londoner invites you to rave on her long-awaited debut album.
“Party people are the ones I want to trust,” sings Rose Gray and you immediately agree with her: Who or what can you still trust given the shitty world situation? Let’s go dancing! The northeast Londoner, a declared Blondie and Beatles fan, is far less naive than the opening line suggests.
She has a mission. Sugar Plum Fairy (that’s her nickname) Gray embodies good old club and rave culture with every fiber, and knows that healing can only happen together with friends on the dance floor. If you take clubbing as seriously as they do, there is little time for mundane things like studio work: from their first, old-school soul-influenced single “Morning Blues” to the release of their debut album LOUDER, PLEASE, it took almost eight years. But there’s nothing to complain about at all, maaates: With these twelve tracks the new year starts as a big rave with Ibiza and techno vibes, with inspiring Brit house and spacey trance.
The song “Free” celebrates the good times and things that cost nothing, while “Tectonic” always amazes the moment of physical attraction. Rose designs herself as a classic disco star, right next to Kylie and Dua Lipa, Ava Max and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. And like any serious artist, Rose Gray doesn’t ignore the dark moments: “Everything Changes (But I Won’t)” is a melancholic and defiant rebellion against people who always knew better. Gray’s “Lost In Music,” so to speak.
