Review: Rolf Blumig :: Circus Blumig

A big promise: “Love is everywhere” promises Rolf Blumig at the beginning of his third album ZIRKUS BLUMIG, only to let an electric guitar take off for the pig rock solo. Does that mean there was more love in the 70s? Shall we love monster rock? Or don’t take him so seriously? The skirt or Rolf flowery? Definitely the latter, after all he promises to counteract physical violence with a “Fiderallala” on his lips. One notices that the musician from Leipzig is not so easy to grasp, even if the madness seems to have been tamed a bit compared to the previous album ROLFIE LEBT, which is exactly one year old.

He hangs around in the shithouse and in the concrete dungeon, he jumps off the balcony out of sheer love, while musically there is even more happening than lyrically, Hammond organs screeching wretchedly, a French horn triumphs, psychedelic guitars looking for drugs, or the singer has misplaced the melody. However: where Blumig once seemed like a less gentle Helge Schneider, who devoted himself to discourse pop, he now seems to be more angry, maybe just more angry at his own ADHD. “When everything shines, we romanticize the shit,” he sings in “Tagicht”, a hymn (or swan song?) to cynicism, because love isn’t everywhere.
