Review: Pink Shabab :: Never Stopped Loving You

Even the cover artwork looks like one big promise. You can see the photo of a dancing young woman, the scene looks so natural and normal, as if the picture was taken at the last youth camp. The music of the British bassist and multi-instrumentalist Joseph Carvell, aka Pink Shabab, often seems correspondingly nostalgic: it sounds like soft pop from the 80s, Chicago house or chillwave, sticky synthies and occasional falsetto vocals.

But the songs are never just retro stuff, you can hear, for example, on the great first track “Kiosk Instrumental” that Carvell has definitely registered the post-indie sound of bands like Dirty Projectors. Carvell, who has already recorded the bass lines for Little Annie, Laetitia Sadier or Baby Dee Batch and also plays in the band Batsch, recorded the soundtrack for the next summer holiday with NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU in late winter, and if you look at the cover then if you look closely again, you’re actually just waiting for Tom Cruise to serve the cocktails.
