Among the German pop stars between songwriters and hip-hop swagger, Jasmin Stocker is perhaps my favorite. Simply because the Stuttgart native is a fantastic singer, trained in jazz singing at the University of Music in Mainz. The words flow out of her mouth in a way that is usually heard from gospel-trained Americans. The song arrangements are perfect, the themes are mostly unvarnishedly personal.
“Baum” is a pop album that skilfully explores all niches and possibilities
“I don’t know” sounds touching and intimate, there isn’t a single piano note too much. “Copycat” poaches bass-heavy Beyoncé territory, and in “Spiegel” Mine shakes out a few baroque strings. “Baum” has become a pop album that skilfully explores all niches and possibilities.
