In the past, artists were concerned: the main about leaving the country drawer as soon as possible, see Taylor Swift. And today? If you want to make it in 2024 and 2025, you run with open arms directly to Nashville – Beyoncé and Post Malone: R showed it in their very own way, sometimes past the establishment like Queen Bey, sometimes in the heart of Nashville like Postie.
Julien Baker (of Boygenius-Fame) and Torres in turn show their very own way. Both are queer icons, which once grew up in fundamental religious communities in the Deep South. Under indie musicians: not necessarily a very usual original story inside. It is somehow obvious to start something together – and so Send a Prayer My Way was created.
The result is a reinterpretation of what Outlaw Country means in 2025. Accordingly, the album was not created in Nashville, but in the artist town of Marfa, Texas. The dry desert air Marfas seems to blow almost through the comforting beautiful songs. Baker and torres do without electronic gimmicks and moments of crosso with rap like other resistant country finders: produce inside. No, from the sound the two remain classic – western guitar, emotional duette, and now and then a fidel (such as on “Bottom of a Bottle”). But nevertheless they manage to create something of their own from the elements of the Outlaw Country, warm, hugging, disarming honestly. Large!
