Review: Jasmine :: In The Wild

Jasmyn Burke wanted more breathing room. And so in 2020 she left her band Weaves, which she had founded eight years earlier, and then Toronto. From now on, the Canadian calls herself Jasmyn and is now based on Lake Ontario. Two huge steps that, in her opinion, urgently needed to be taken. So that the singer/songwriter can breathe properly again. Less stressed by the city noise and the constant tour routine.

Jasmyn dared to get out of the known clusters and happily embraced the uncertainty. So on her solo debut we hear a kind of introspection, her gaze into the lush green. She combines her thoughts with what she discovers in nature – and from this develops hymns to being, in which her voice is always the driving element. Who would have thought that such an indie rock celebration could arise in the midst of the corona pandemic.

Together with the producer John Congleton she has developed such a dense and at the same time relaxed soundscape that it blows you away. The eleven pieces are also full of interpersonal moments, which she knows how to break up in their complexity with the help of soft melodies and a bit of spirituality.
