The Brit and her band play such beautiful singer/songwriter folk about queer friendship and love that the proximity to Boygenius becomes secondary.
You first have to manage that the collaboration with Boygenius, i.e. Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, is almost the least interesting thing about your debut album. But Jasmine.4.t and her band manage to make you almost forget that everyone’s favorite rock all-star band were on board as producers. This is primarily due to Jasmine.4.t’s touching songs, but also her characteristic plucky guitar playing, which gives the songs an airy, light atmosphere.
But first things first: In 2021, the British musician, whose real life name is Jasmine Cruickshank and comes from Manchester, came out as trans, her marriage ended and she experienced a period of great change and uncertainty. The salvation in the midst of this chaos was queer friendship, the community – and of course the music.
Three years later, at the end of this process there is an album that Jasmine.4.t recorded with Boygenius in Los Angeles together with her band, in which all members are trans. Songs like “Elephant” with backup vocals from the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles and guitar from Julien Baker about the first crush after coming out are reminiscent of Elliott Smith, while the punky “Guy Fawkes Tesco Dissociation” is reminiscent of the Silver Jews . Jasmine.4.t manages to pack complicated feelings, transformation, farewell and new beginnings into wonderfully light-hearted songs – one of the best debut albums of the young year.
