With their first album IBEYI they traced the family tree of their French-Afro-Cuban family, ASHES negotiated
Racism. The title of the third disc SPELL 31 refers to the “Egyptian Book of the Dead”, a collection of magic spells and liturgical formulas. Among these texts, “Spell 31” sounds like a kind of announcement: Anyone who thinks they are speaking against the author’s magic will feel it.

In the key song “Made Of Gold” Ibeyi quote the saying: “The sky encloses the stars / I enclose Magic, I enclose Magic”. The album was again produced by XL boss Richard Russell, together with Ibeyi he found an adventurous sound in the best sense of the word , which fuses Björk’s spiritual electro-pop with hip-hop, Latin neo-soul, Afro influences and the summoning music of Dead Can Dance.
