The known almost compulsively busy Frank Zappa was one of the first musicians to see the medium of television as a potential vehicle for their art – years before MTV was even considered. So in the rehearsal room of the band, equipped with the complete light and sound equipment, he had various performances recorded by a film team in order to offer them interested channels.

The problem: On the one hand there were technical problems, on the other hand, America’s TV-like-maker of those years obviously felt little tendency to leave a designated citizen fright like Zappa precious broadcast time, which is why Cheaper Than Cheep disappeared in the archive. Now the recording from 1974 appears as a box set with three LPs, double CD and the concert film on Blu-ray and large-format book.
Contemporary fan favorites such as “Montana”, “Cosmik Debris” and “Camarillo Brillo” meet early works such as “How Could I Be Such a Fool” and “Let’s make the Water Turn Black”, performed by the highly gifted Mother’s incarnation for George Duke and Chester Thompson. Undoubtedly a recommendation for fans of that creative phase.
