“Damn stag” is said in those parts of Ireland where Gaelic is still spoken when something rarely stupid happens to you. Tripping over the untied shoelaces, for example. Or bumping the music bone at the table. “Damn stag” in Gaelic: SKINTY FIA – Fontaines DC have named their third album after this exclamation, continuing their journey into Irish mythology.

SKINTY FIA tries to quantify what it is like to live in London as a person of Irish descent. The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan wrote some incredibly good songs about these identity issues in the ’80s, and singer-songwriter Grian Chatten is now following in his footsteps. Not necessarily musically, the band mostly stays true to post-punk, only the accordion minimalism of “The Couple Across The Way” and the driving acoustic guitars of the single “Jackie Down The Line” sound folkloric.
The Irish influence is evident in the lyrics: on “Roman Holiday” Chatten sings “I don’t wanna see the Queen / I already sing her song”, the James Joyce homage “Bloomsday” refers to the Irish memorial day in honor of Leopold Bloom, the hero of the national novel ‘Ulysses’, ‘In ár gCroíthe go deo’, translated as ‘Forever in our hearts’, tells the story of an Irish woman living in England who was refused the right to have a Gaelic saying engraved on her future tombstone let it be, this language seems too provocative. The judgment has now been revised. The problem remains.
