Review: Death Cab For Cutie :: Asphalt Meadows

Even die-hard Death Cab fans would admit their heartfelt band has entered their veteran era after milestones like TRANSATLANTICISM (2003) and PLANS (2005). That means: ideally, don’t alienate the old fans and don’t become a cliché. ASPHALT MEADOWS shows that the band is up to the task. There are several beautiful songs that line up in Death Cab For Cutie’s not lacking in beautiful songs back catalog: the 3/4-bar ballad “Rand McNally” or “Wheat Like Waves”, whose intro resembles that of “A Movie Script Ending ” remind.

Singer Ben Gibbard does not bend unnecessarily, but sings with the usual powers of observation from his current perspective as a 45-year-old, to whom the finitude of things has already become very clear: “I never would have thought that life was so long / That we’d be growing old with stories untold.” The songs were created via Dropbox links that the band members sent to each other in turn after working on them individually. That explains the pleasantly surprising sounds like the shoegaze guitars in “Foxglove Through The Clearcut” and the generous use of synths. Death Cab can continue like this.
