Review: Ben Gregory :: Episode

Review order If this were about the same as Ben simply unreadable Gregory’s solo debut they EPISODE would be. Sounds weird? Let’s put it in a nutshell: If this review had anything like the same order as Ben Gregory’s EPISODE, it would be utterly unreadable. Exactly like this first movement sounds the solo debut of the former Blaenavon singer and guitarist. EPISODE only has marginally something in common with his former band. Rather, it contains a darkly colored, brightly sparkling mix of emotions and genres.

A kind of THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL, which – in contrast to Nine Inch Nails – points upwards. The way back. Although the work is based on Gregory’s stay in a psychiatric hospital and subsequent recovery at home with his mother, he does not despair. In all the darkness there is always hope, in all hope there is always darkness.

“Blue Sea Blue” shifts from a kind of electro-jazz-rock something to indie-rock to piano-pop. “Deathbad Hangover” starts out as an electro Elliott Smith, but turns industrial to end up in New Order. As EPISODE progresses, it calms down more and more, finds some rest. But even in the vulnerable “Smoke” an ever-increasing electronic threat is slowly creeping up. Hopefully Gregory will be spared more dark episodes.
