Review: Ale Hop :: Why Is It They Say A City Like Any City?

Paradoxically, the pandemic has favored international cooperation. The fourth album by the experimental musician Ale Hop is also the result of an international exchange process: During a trip through South America, Alejandra Cárdenas sent messages out into the world and received from her adopted home of Berlin from, among others, KMRU, Elsa M’Bala and Felicity Mangan, but also from Moisés Horta and Concepcion Huerta from Mexico, Ana Quiroga from Great Britain or Manongo Mujica from Cárdenas’ country of birth Peru provided answers in the form of disparate sounds, which she arranged into six different pieces.

WHY IS IT THEY SAY A CITY LIKE ANY CITY? is accordingly versatile and literally polyphonic − voices are often used in these sound collages, which are infused with fine rhythms and bring concrete sounds together with abstract noises. Ale Hop’s albums have always been patchwork quilts, and this one even more so. Above all, their talent for working out psychedelic tensions from organic sounds ensures coherence.
