Review: AA Williams :: As The Moon Rests

Before she discovered hard and dark sounds à la Nine Inch Nails and Deftones, AA Williams enjoyed classical piano and cello training. Both can be seen in their music. As on her 2020 debut, the Londoner dresses her concentrated melancholy in a robe of acoustic solemnity and heaviness on AS THE MOON RETS.

And especially with the latter, she ups the ante: Williams rolls out heavy carpets of distorted metal guitars and unleashes powerful post-rock waves. Strings provide additional pathos tinder. However, while Williams makes extensive use of the loud-quiet dynamic, she levels off in tempo between elegy and power ballad and lyrically circles around hurt and hopelessness again and again.

It’s atmospheric in the strong moments, cheesy in the bad ones and a little tiring for an album length of a good 60 minutes. At least acoustic numbers like “Shallow Water” and “Ruin” provide variety, if only in the instrumentation. The title of Williams’ first album, FOREVER BLUE, is probably to be taken literally.
