It is not yet an official ceremony, but the PSV championship seems to be in full swing in Erp. At café ‘t Schansoord, about 250 supporters were partying with torches and beer on Monday, while the city of Eindhoven is preparing for Tuesday’s big Stadhuisplein celebration.
The PSV championship celebration will only start in Eindhoven on Tuesday, but for these supporters that was just a little too long to wait. “We just couldn’t wait until tomorrow.” says a fan as she raises a beer. “It’s always friendly in Erp. Everyone knows each other, and there is a lot of fun.”
For Frits Bovers, chairman of PSV Fans United, the party in Erp feels extra special. “We are here celebrating 27 championships,” he says. “It’s been a long time coming. But yes, there was a bit of sand in the engine, I think, in recent weeks. But of course we are very happy now,” he says with a broad smile.
Loyal fan Pieter, who is present for the first time, is immediately drawn into the party atmosphere. “It’s great fun here. I’ll definitely be back next year,” he says.
Years of tradition
For the fans in Erp, celebrating the championship is not a one-time event, it is a tradition that has lasted for decades. Since 1997, parties have continued at café ‘t Schansoord after each ceremony, and every championship year it attracts more and more supporters from Erp and the surrounding villages.
Organizer Joep Deckers had no trouble adjusting the schedule this year. “It is of course Easter and this day fell between the ceremony and the actual championship. It couldn’t have been easier for us to plan it in between,” he explains.
He says that the party is far from over: “Gradually people will drop out. But usually until about nine or ten o’clock. And then tomorrow is of course a very important day.”
Crowds on the Stadhuisplein
Frits Bovers sees the crowds in Eindhoven coming on Tuesday and doesn’t think it is entirely ideal. “Tomorrow it will end up in a madhouse again. Far too many people who actually come just like that. There will be too few people on Stadhuisplein who actually have a PSV club card. That’s a shame, because then it will be much too busy.”
For three other enthusiastic supporters, the crowds should not spoil the fun. “No, we will definitely be there all day tomorrow for the ceremony,” they say. Pieter adds: “I will definitely go to the ceremony tomorrow. I even had to take a day off for it. I have had a season ticket for almost 40 years now. I have attended seventeen championships. And I have seen all seventeen of the ceremonies,” he says proudly.
For Frits, that is exactly why the party in Erp is so important. “That’s why I’m here again today for the umpteenth time.” Here the supporters celebrate the championship together with their fellow villagers, and those who still have energy can continue to the hustle and bustle in Eindhoven tomorrow for the official ceremony.
