Revelry at AZ short-lived: “Be stoic and don’t flutter”

The joy at AZ was great after the victory over Lazio (2-1). The players celebrated with the audience after the game, because the Alkmaarders stunted by eliminating the Italians. “I think we deserved to win,” says defender Wouter Goes.

The young defender was again in the starting line-up and could effortlessly compete in the level. AZ put a great match on the mat and imposed its will on Lazio. If the balls fell just a little better, the Alkmaarders could have even ended the game with a much higher score.

Tijjani Reijnders hit the post twice. The midfielder is proud after the victory. “We showed our qualities in Rome and here. You can see the confidence growing in the game. All in all, a great performance.”

The opponent in the quarterfinals of the Conference League will be announced tomorrow at the draw. That is AA Gent, Lech Poznan, Fiorentina, FC Basel, OGC Nice, Anderlecht or West Ham United. After eliminating Lazio, confidence is growing in a happy ending. “A lot is possible,” says a sober Goes. “It can certainly become something very beautiful.”

In recent weeks, AZ has been recovering after a dip. With business victories against FC Groningen and Vitesse (twice 1-0) and two nice victories against Lazio, the ‘flow’ is back. “This was our goal. You saw Feyenoord last season and Lazio was one of the favourites. We just have to keep going stoically and not flutter too much”, Reijnders concludes.
