The official told Reuters that the attacks targeted a military site that would pose a threat to US forces in the region and to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The US military is also said to have intercepted and shot down several Iranian drones that would have posed a similar threat. The US attacks took place during negotiations to end the war against Iran started by the US and Israel, which has now lasted three months.
Iranian state media previously reported that three explosions were heard east of the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas on Wednesday night. The city is located in the southern province of Hormozgan on the Strait of Hormuz.
The US also carried out strikes against Iran on Monday, which Washington described as “defensive.” US targets included boats that allegedly attempted to lay mines, as well as missile launch facilities that the US military’s Central Command said posed a threat to US troops.
Iran says the US attacks violated the ceasefire between the two countries and called it “aggressive and unjustified actions.”
