The AI system, named Reti-Pioneer, was introduced in the journal Nature Medicine in July 2026. This innovative technology analyzes fundus photographs, or images of the retina, and identifies six metabolic disorders within half a minute: Type 2 diabetes, gout, osteoporosis, hypertension, lipid metabolism disorders, and thyroid diseases.
Reti-Pioneer was trained using over 107,000 images from international databases, including the UK Biobank. The detection accuracy for diabetes was recorded at 0.833 (AUROC). More importantly, its predictive potential is significant: the AI can forecast these diseases five to ten years before the first symptoms appear. In pilot studies, the AI analysis (AUROC 0.776) markedly outperformed traditional risk assessments conducted via questionnaires (0.565).
Aging Macular Degeneration as an Indicator for Cancer
The retina offers even more valuable insights. A Korean observational study published in July in the journal Aging explored the relationship between neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cancer risks. The results showed that patients with this type of AMD have an 8.4% higher overall cancer risk. The data were notably pronounced for specific tumor types:

– Kidney cancer: +17.7%
– Pancreatic cancer: +15.5%

GLP-1 Medications: Monitoring Rare Eye Risks
Retinal monitoring also plays a crucial role concerning modern medications. A study published in July in the Annals of Internal Medicine investigated GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly used in diabetes and weight reduction therapies. The study found an increased risk of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a rare eye condition, when compared to SGLT2 inhibitors.
