Restored and only remaining fishing card unveiled in Hoorn: “Wonderful piece of history”

With the old main tower in the background, a decades-old fishing card was unveiled this morning in the harbor of Hoorn. This historical fish storage place was half sunken in the harbor for a long time and was in bad shape, but has now been completely restored. “It is wonderful that we have renovated this piece of history together and that the viskaar can now be admired again,” says Hoorn alderman Axel Boomgaars of Heritage and Culture.

The unveiling of the fishing chart was accompanied by a roar in the VHF radio this morning around 11:00 am by aldermen Boomgaars and René Assendelft. After this the ship was sailed into the harbor by two Hoornse Schouwen and a Staverse Jol.

An information board will be placed at the new location of the historic fish box, where visitors can read that this box – which is also called aalbun or viskas

Between 1980 and 2000, the viskade was located in the Vluchthaven on the Veermanskade, and has been refurbished thanks to several parties.

According to alderman Assendelft, the only remaining storage place for fish, which was mainly used in the 1950s, is an extra tourist attraction for the port, refurbished quays and the award of the Blue Flag. “An attractive port is important for all our residents.”

Craft is maintained

According to a spokesman for the municipality of Hoorn, the fishing card tells something about the history and fishing past. “Hoorn was an important fishing port for a long time. In this way, the viskaar is again part of the historic harbor ribbon of Hoorn. Because the viskaar is located a little more in the city center, it is also a nice connection to our historic city center and port.”

Alderman Axel Boomgaars van Hoorn adds that the old storage place also serves a social purpose, because Leerwerkbedrijf Oostereiland carried out the restoration. “In this way a craft is maintained.”
