Last Monday started excavating the Brink pondalso called the Coeswaerde. The new pond must collect excess rainwater to prevent inconvenience for local residents and entrepreneurs in the center.

Not everyone is enthusiastic about the project. A group of Laarders, led by Jeroen Ten Kroode and Maria Klingenberg, is strongly opposed. They believe that the renovation affects the protected villagescape and therefore also harms the local economy.

So they kept a petition which was signed more than 2,200 times, they went to the judge and the objections committee and they did a so-called ‘request for reconsideration.’ But all these attempts to stop the renovation did not have the desired effect.

Ultimately, all political and legal signals were green and the municipality gave the starting signal for the renovation.

Back to court

Nevertheless, Ten Kroode and Klingenberg continue to fight. This afternoon they were again in court in Utrecht. This time they dispute the basis of the municipal plans, which according to them now assume extreme rainfall of 70 millimeters per hour, while previous calculations were based on 60 millimeters per hour.
