So the substantive treatment will begin after all. It appears that there is a lot of distrust between the group of local residents and the employees at the Spanderswoud Medical Center.

“When we purchased the property, we sent a letter with our preliminary plans,” says the GP. “We received a lot of negative reactions to that.” For example, local residents are said to have threatened lengthy legal proceedings and even going to the Council of State. “It felt annoying, so we organized a meeting for local residents.”

The GP emphasizes that the plans were not yet concrete at that time, because it was still unclear which healthcare providers would rent space in the center.

After this meeting, the now well-known banners were hung in the front gardens and on the hedges along the road. “We felt the negativity from the neighborhood.” As a result, local residents would also be less involved in the renovation.

Faced with new plans

But the group of local residents has a different interpretation. “We received a letter about a ‘small-scale medical center’, but we were not sure. There was no concrete plan,” says one of the local residents.

After the meeting, local residents were supposed to be kept informed of the developments, but that did not happen. In fact, local residents state that they were confronted with new developments during the hearing, such as the medical center’s aim to remain open in the evenings and weekends.

The center’s permit holders therefore promise that they will send another letter to residents in January, containing more concrete plans.

“It all could have been better,” the judge said in summary. The judge hopes to rule in the case at the end of January.
