CLike the ghosts of Dickensian Christmases past, they sometimes resurface. Gifts received and not appreciated which ended up in the back of our wardrobes or on the highest shelves in the cellar. So as not to extend the ranks with the unwanted gifts received this Christmas 2024solutions exist. The smartest one is called reselling, i.e. reselling everything immediately, without guilt.

All crazy about vintage, second-hand and eco-awareness

Christmas 2024, what to do with unwanted gifts?

An investigation carried out by Subito.it on GenZ and Millennials has drawn up a ranking of the least appreciated gifts. Those with the so-called “hospital kit” win, i.e. pajamas, socks, slippers (31%). Thumbs down also for beauty&friends accessories, such as the bathroom set (25%), always perceived as an allusion to dubious personal hygiene. But there are many objects, perhaps even valuable ones, that simply are not to our taste or are not suitable for us: because we don’t like the color, because they look bad on us, because we already have a similar one but it seems bad to change it.

Rather than abandoning these gifts in a corner with a view to future decluttering, it is better not to even let them enter the wardrobe. A useful solution is the regifting: giving them to others, being very careful not to give them to people in the same circle and to remove any labels that could reveal their origin.

Reselling unwanted gifts is convenient for everyone

But it’s there an even smarter way to give unlikely gifts a second chance. That is, resell them.

This way you not only get rid of unwanted sweaters, bracelets and coffee sets. Not only does it give them a second chance, and the opportunity to meet someone who truly appreciates them (avoiding the multiplication of consumer goods). But you can also earn something (or a lot) from the operation.

Putting Christmas gifts back into circulation is an increasingly widespread habiteven in Italy, thanks to the ease of doing it online. Silvia Campanella, Head of Communications & Sustainability of Subito.it, the leading platform in Italy for buying and selling second hand, explains it. «The Italians seem to be very favorable to this practice. Our BVA Doxa Second Hand Economy 2023 Observatory finds that over 37% of respondents choose to resell and recirculate unappreciated gifts. An opportunity that not only helps to get rid of superfluous objects, but also allows you to make more informed choices, contributing to a circular and more sustainable economy.”

Reselling and second hand: the advantages for those who resell, for those who receive, for the Planet

Such is the awareness on these issues that reselling platforms are no longer perceived in a negative way either by those who buy or by those who receive.

They are now an alternative, peer-to-peer shopping channel, capable of responding to the green sensitivity of the new generations. But they are not just convenient: these platforms also allow you to find products that have sold out elsewhere and unique pieces.

The specific advantage, in the case of Christmas gifts, is that a new object is put back into circulation and purchased, which can therefore be very attractive and make the most of it.
