Bodies in Romania have failed to lend cultural heritage to the Drents Museum. That is the conclusion of the Romanian Prime Minister’s audit body who has drawn up a report on this, several Romanian media report tonight. With an artok, Romanian art treasures were stolen from the museum in Assen.

The researchers have found “serious shortcomings” when it comes to, among other things, the security of the national heritage if it is exhibited abroad. For example, the National Historical Museum of Romania and the Ministry of Culture in that country were obliged to take measures to prevent theft, but they failed in that monitoring according to the control body.

Irregularities have also been established by the body of approval and export procedures of the heritage. According to the researchers, monitoring the objects in Assen turned out to be less strict than with exhibitions in Madrid and Rome. The purchasing of specialized security personnel who should have continuously guaranteeing safety had been in place, they say.

In the night from Friday 24 to Saturday 25 January, the thieves struck. A historic golden helmet and three bracelets have been stolen. Three suspects were arrested in the case, two men and a woman. They are still stuck.
